Gingivitis / Periodontal disease

Brushing and flossing at least twice a day is a good way to keep your mouth healthy. Unfortunately is it often not enough or the cleaning is deficient. Due to teeth discoloration and superficial stains that slowly built up, you eventually need professional cleaning to remove these from visible and hidden areas in the mouth. By doing this regularly you reduce the risk of getting gingivitis or serious mouth diseases like periodontitis and caries.

Gingivitis treatment

At ZahnCity we give you a careful and professional cleaning that suits your needs. Some people have a higher risk of gingivitis and mouth diseases, for instance, diabetics and smokers. Therefore we inform and treat every patient individually. Some are recommended to come more frequently if necessary. If you wish or if it is necessary we recommend your gingivitis treatment with an anesthetic.

Treatment is based on the symptoms detected by the professional dentists

Some of the common symptoms of gingivitis include:

  • Change of gum color to bright red or purple
  • Bleeding gums while brushing and flossing
  • Increased gum sensitivity
  • Inflammation or swelling of gums
  • Receding gums
  • Persistent bad breath
  • Foul taste in the mouth

Causes of Gingivitis

It is a dental problem that mainly starts because of poor dental hygiene but depends on many different factors. Smoking, genetics, critical periodontal bacteria and diabetes are important factors. What you can do to reduce the risk of gingivitis and periodontitis is to stop smoking, maintain adequate cleaning at home and regularly visit your dental hygienist.

Risk factors

One of the most severe risk factors of gingivitis is that it more often than not precedes periodontitis.

Periodontitis/Periodontal disease

So what is really periodontitis? Often we call it gum disease because it begins there. Inflammation in the gums is the first step of the disease. You notice the inflamed gums when they bleed during brushing or flossing. When the gums do not bleed during cleaning it is a good sign. However, when time elapses with inflamed gums the inflammation continues down along the teeth and affects the tooth-holding threads (periodontal threads) and the bone around the teeth. With time the inflammation leads to a loss of periodontal threads and bone. In the worst cases, the teeth will be lost if the disease is not treated on time.

Complications of Untreated Gingivitis

Periodontitis is the most critical condition that untreated gingivitis can lead to. Besides that, some of the equally dental problems that you can face as the condition worsens are:

  • Teeth loosening
  • Loss of teeth
  • Recurring pus on the gums
  • Increasing damage to the periodontal ligament
  • Damage or loss of the alveolar bone

Prevention Measures

A periodontist provides professional dental hygiene treatment that consists of:

  • Control and information, including a short periodontal check
  • Aesthetic cleaning
  • Deep cleaning if needed
  • Teeth polishing
  • Oral hygiene instructions and advice for correct dental care
  • A recommendation consisting of special products
